Discrimination Against Youth

As of right now, a U.S. citizen cannot vote until the age of eighteen. This age is considered to be the age of an adult in the eyes of the U.S. government. However, many will argue that this age should be reduced to sixteen. Sixteen-year-old kids can drive, get debit cards, and get a job but are not able to vote. Many states agree with this progressive idea. "Fifteen states...[are] already are on board; they permit 16- and/or 17-year-olds to register so that they can vote as soon as they turn 18. Twenty-four states and D.C. let 17-year-olds vote in primary elections if they will turn 18 by Election Day" (Flynn). The U.S. relies on participation from the people. Only 61.4 % on Americans voted in the 2016 election. If citizens were to start voting earlier in their lives, would the participation of voting go up?
